Plaid AM's u-turn on blogging

Not so long ago I did a bit of research on Welsh Assembly blogging patterns. After two or three emails, most of the AMs got back to me.

I'm very grateful for all the responses, particularly this one from Plaid Ceredigion AM Elin Jones. She said: "I don’t blog because I haven’t the time... I don’t think they are effective for communicating with voters – they are only effective within the political elite."

Strange, then, that Elin has just started a blog at It's heavy on politics and light on personality, but a blog's a blog.

Perhaps she's woken up to the fact that there's a big whopping university in her constituency. Last time round, at the general election, an orange brigade of students helped secure a Lib Dem victory. The sitting MP, Plaid's Simon Thomas, lost his seat despite being among the first politicians to blog.

Anyway, Elin, welcome to the 'political elite'.

You don't think that any of the students in her constituency are actually going to read her blog do you?

These are Aberystwyth students, remember.

If any university has students interested in Welsh politics, it must surely be Aber.

Yeah, the 200 or so politics students maybe...

By contrast, Labour's Alun Davies seems to have died a death, judging by this comment.

Must have been difficult "fighting for socialism" when you're spending your time fighting Rhys Ifans, taking money off tobacco firms and supporting nuclear power.

Do you mean Alun Davies has died or just his blog?

Ooops. The blog of course.

well I think its a good thing that Elin's blogging. Well done. There will definitely be political students reading her blog, not sure if they will be from the politics department though..ironically, they were always the least politically active while I was at Aber.

I also welcome Elin to the world of the blog - a world to which I hope to return in the near future.

I can also reassure you that both I, and my blog, are in exceptional good health. The reason for the over-long Christmas holiday is that the site is being re-built to include more political stuff and to be a bit more interactive.

Oh good - then he'll find out what the voters really think about him ;-)
